Deal appoints 17 to boards
Heidi M. Altman, Council on American Indian Concerns
Altman is an associate professor of Anthropology at Georgia Southern University. She is a linguistic anthropologist who works in Native American communities and consults for tribes on language revitalization strategies. Altman earned a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees from Florida State University and a doctorate degree from the University of California, Davis. She has one son, Dalton. They reside in Statesboro.
Garrison B. Baker, Board of Commissioners of the Judges of the Probate Courts Retirement Fund (reappointment)
Baker is the probate court judge for White County. He was elected in 1983 and has continuously served for the past 28 years. He serves on the board of directors of the White County Historical Society and Ninth District Opportunity, Inc. Baker has authored two books on the conservation and preservation of Northeast Georgia’s history and cultural heritage. Baker attended Gainesville College and the University of Georgia. He resides in Cleveland.
J. Newton Bates Sr., Georgia Board of Private Detective and Security Agencies
Bates is the owner and operator of Newton Bates Investigative and Consulting Services. He is the former director of public relations for Georgia Young Farmers and a former swine farmer. He is currently serving in his second term as a member of the Ware County Board of Elections and Registration. Bates earned a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Science from Auburn University. He and his wife, Jenny, have five children and nine grandchildren. They reside in Waycross.
Gary P. Braddy, Board of Commissioners of the Judges of the Probate Courts Retirement Fund (reappointment)
Braddy is the chief financial officer and secretary of Braddy Farms, Inc. and the municipal court judge for the city of Mount Vernon. He is a former probate court judge for Montgomery County. He served nine consecutive terms and retired in 2000. He serves on the board of trustees for Brewton-Parker College and the board of directors for Meadows Regional Medical Center and East Georgia Heath Center. He was appointed senior probate judge in 2000 and in 2001 the “Gary P. Braddy Highway” was named for him by the Georgia General Assembly. Braddy is a recipient of the 1998 Montgomery Citizen of the Year award and the 1993 Man of the Year in Soil and Water Conservation award. He and his wife, Barbara, have four children and six grandchildren. They reside in Mount Vernon.
Leonard R. LaRussa, Board of Examiners for Podiatrists
LaRussa has been in private practice serving the community of Americus and surrounding counties since 1996. He is a board certified podiatrist by the American Board of Podiatric Surgeons. He serves on the board of directors of the Georgia Podiatric Medical Association and as a Carrier Advisory Committee representative to Medicare. He is a diplomat of the American Professional Wound Care Association. LaRussa earned a bachelor’s degree from Montgomery College, a medical degree from New York College of Podiatric Medicine and completed his surgical residency at the University of Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Nikki, have two sons. They reside in Americus.
Emily P. Myers, Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Authority (reappointment)
Myers is the president and CEO of Myers McRae Executive Search & Consulting in Macon. Prior to becoming president of Myers McRae, she served 29 years as senior vice president for University Advancement and External Affairs at Mercer. She has also held administrative positions at Jacksonville University and Stetson University School of Law. She serves on the board of the Rome Chamber Music Festival in New York. Myers earned a bachelor’s degree from Florida State University. She and her son, Robb, reside in Macon.
Steve D. Nicklas, Council on American Indian Concerns
Nicklas is an associate professor of Anthropology at Gainesville State College. He has been involved in academic archaeology since 1973. Nicklas has excavated extensively in the United States, the Middle East and to a lesser extent in the United Kingdom. Nicklas earned a bachelor’s degree from Lycoming College, a master’s degree from Drew University and a doctorate degree from the Institute of Archaeology, University of London. He has two children, James and Brandi. They reside in Cumming.
Paula S. Sparks, Child Fatality Review Panel
Sparks currently serves as the major in command of the Crimes Against Persons unit for the Cobb County Police Department. She is an active committee member and co-chair of the Cobb County Protocol Committee. Sparks is a graduate of the FBI National Academy for law enforcement managers, holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina and a master’s degree from Columbus State University. She resides in Kennesaw.
Kris L. Sperry, Child Fatality Review Panel (reappointment)
Sperry has held the position of chief medical examiner for the State of Georgia with the GBI since 1997. Prior to this position, he worked with the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office between 1990 and 1997. Sperry earned a bachelor’s degree from Kansas State College of Pittsburg and a medical degree from University of Kansas. He completed his pathology residency with the University of New Mexico and his forensic pathology fellowship with the Office of the Medical Investigator for New Mexico. He and his wife, Janis, reside in Senoia.
W. Perry Tindol, Stone Mountain Memorial Association
Tindol is a partner and chief financial officer of Allgood Pest Solutions in Duluth. He serves on the board of directors of the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce and on the chamber’s public policy committee. In addition, Tindol serves on the Gwinnett Salvation Army Advisory Board and the Rotary Club of Gwinnett, where he is a past president. Tindol earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern University. He and his wife, Tammy, have two sons, Daniel and Brian. They reside in Dacula.
Peggy H. Walker, Child Fatality Review Panel
Walker is a juvenile court judge for Douglas County. She serves as a trustee for the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, on the Georgia Commission on Family Violence and as co-chair of the Family Violence Advisory Committee for the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges. Walker earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgia College and a master’s degree in Education and a law degree from Georgia State University. Walker has one son, Adam. She resides in Douglasville.
E.K. May Jr., Child Fatality Review Panel
May is a partner at May and Smith Funeral Directors in Sandersville. He previously served as executive director for the Tennille Housing Authority, as the Washington County Emergency Management Director and as an identification specialist in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He has been a licensed funeral director and embalmer for more than 40 years. May is a graduate of Middle Georgia College and Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He and his wife, Deborah, have two children and two grandchildren. They reside in Tennille.
R. Charles “Randy” Daniel, Board of Dentistry
Daniel has been a private practice dentist in Stockbridge since 1984. He is a member of the medical staff of Henry Medical Center. Daniel is also a member of the American Dental Association, where he was made an honorable fellow and a recipient of the President’s Award from the Northern District Dental Society. Daniel earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from the College of William and Mary and a dental degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He and his wife, Marcia, have two daughters. They reside in Stockbridge.
Kirby R. Moore, Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Authority (reappointment)
Moore has been a practicing attorney since 1973. He received his bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Georgia where he was captain of the football team. Moore went on to receive his juris doctorate degree from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University. He is a former director of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Foundation, the former president of the University of Georgia Alumni Association, and emeritus member of the University of Georgia Athletic Association Board of Directors. He is the former president of the Macon Touchdown Club in Macon, where he has lived for 40 years. Moore has four children and four grandchildren.
Larry R. Corry, Board of Veterinary Medicine
Corry is the owner and practicing veterinarian of two small animal hospitals in Buford. He is the past president of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association. Corry has been named Georgia Veterinarian of the Year and a Distinguished Alumnus of the University Of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Corry earned a doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia. He and his wife, Carleen, have four children and six grandchildren. They reside in Buford.
Katie L. Glover, Board of Cosmetology
Glover owns and operates a multi-chair salon in North Georgia. She has served in the cosmetology industry for 31 years. Glover studied under the educational direction of Scott Cole of the Scott Cole salon in Buckhead. She and her husband, Robert, have three children. They reside in Gainesville.
William “Tony” Moye, Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Authority (reappointment)
Moye is founder of the Moye’s Pharmacy chain in Henry County. He serves on the United Community Board for Henry County, on the Board of Trustees of Mercer University, on the University of West Georgia Foundation Board, the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy and is the past chair of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce. Moye earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of West Georgia and a degree in Pharmacy from Mercer University. He and his wife, Nancy, have one son and two grandchildren. They reside in McDonough.
