Deal appoints 25 to boards

Glenda E. Anderson, Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board
Anderson retired as the director of the City of Savannah Research Library and Municipal Archives in April 2011. Her professional venues have included the American Library Association, the Georgia Library Association, the National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators, the Society of Georgia Archivists, the Georgia Records Association, and the Savannah Heritage Emergency Response. She is a past recipient of the McJenkin-Rheay Award from the Georgia Library Association for her work as a young librarian, as well as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board. Anderson earned a bachelor’s degree from Armstrong State College and a master’s degree from Emory University. She and her husband, Larry, have one daughter, and are expecting their first grandchild in 2012. They reside in Savannah.

William C. Bacon, Composite Board of Professional Counselors, Social Workers, and Marriage & Family Therapists (reappointment)
Bacon is vice president of development for the Georgia Baptist Health Care Ministry Foundation. He is a member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, the Georgia Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, and a fellow in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors. Bacon earned a bachelor’s degree from Mercer University, as well as a master’s and a doctoral degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Angela, have two children and four grandchildren. They reside in Tyrone.

Ben P. Marion, Composite Board of Professional Counselors, Social Workers and Marriage & Family Therapists (reappointment)
Marion is the chief executive officer at Turning Point Hospital in Moultrie. He is a licensed clinical social worker and licensed marriage and family therapist. He is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the Georgia Alliance for Children’s Hall County Chapter, and the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. He is active in several community organizations including the Moultrie YMCA, United Way, the Healthy Colquitt Coalition, and the First United Methodist Church of Moultrie. Marion earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work from the University of Georgia. He and his wife, Jennifer, have four children and four grandchildren. They reside in Moultrie.

Jack Perryman, Composite Board of Professional Counselors, Social Workers, and Marriage & Family Therapists (reappointment)
Perryman retired from Georgia Department of Corrections in 2002. After retirement, he has worked as a mental health therapist for Mental Health Management and the Albany Area Community Service Board in Blakely. He is past president of the Albany Toastmasters and has served on the Calhoun County Hospital Board. He is a member of Leary United Methodist Church. Perryman earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Georgia and a master’s degree in counseling from Troy University. He has two daughters and one son. He resides in Leary.

Robert C. King, Composite Board of Professional Counselors, Social Workers, and Marriage & Family Therapists
King retired as a project manager for BellSouth. He currently works as the coordinator for the Dawson County Treatment Court. He is a licensed clinical social worker in Florida and Georgia. He has been a continuous presenter at the Georgia Drug, Driving Under the Influence, and Mental Health Court Conference as well as the National Association of Drug Court Professionals. King earned a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York and a master’s degree in social work from Barry University. He and his wife, Lauren, have one daughter, Grace. They reside in Dahlonega. 

Nancy S. Barton, Board of Nursing
Barton is the director of Clinical Resource Management and Nursing Support Services at Northeast Georgia Health System in Gainesville. She is a member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the Georgia Organization of Nursing Leaders, Sigma Theta Tau and the National Association of Healthcare Quality. Barton earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in nursing from the Georgia Health Sciences University. She has one daughter, Sandra, and four grandchildren. She resides in Gainesville.

Brenda B. Rowe, Board of Nursing
Rowe is an associate professor at Georgia Baptist College of Nursing of Mercer University. She has served 28 years in the Army Nurse Corps for the United States Army Reserves. She is a member of Georgia Nurses Association and State Bar of Georgia. She earned a bachelor’s degree from University of Evansville, a master’s degree from Emory University, and a law degree from Georgia State University. She and her husband, Grant, have three children and two grandchildren. They reside in Grayson.

Julian I. Deal, Board of Accountancy
Deal has been a certified public accountant since 1966. He is a member of the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants, Bethany Home Inc., and the Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation. He is a past president of the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants where he was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Award and Public Service Award for the organization. Deal earned a bachelor’s degree in business education from Georgia Southern University. He is a recipient of Georgia Southern University’s Alumnus of the Year Award and was inducted into the school’s Business Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Frances, have two children and three grandsons. They reside in Statesboro.

William P. Defino, Board of Examiners for Certification of Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators and Laboratory Analysts (reappointment)
Defino is an environmental specialist III for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division, Drinking Water Program. He is a licensed, Class I, Georgia Water Treatment Plant Operator & Lab Analyst as well as a Class I, Georgia Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator & Lab Analyst. He is a member of the Georgia Rural Water Association, the Georgia Association of Water & Wastewater Professionals and Trout Unlimited. Defino earned a bachelor's degree in forest hydrology from the University of Georgia. He and his wife, Alicia Barton, reside in Clarkesville.

Stanley L. Tate, Board of Examiners for Certification of Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators and Laboratory Analysts (reappointment)
Tate retired as the executive vice president and chief environmental officer with Southwire Company in 2008. He is a member of the Board of Visitors of Berry College and previously served as the chairman of the Carroll County Planning Commission and the Carroll County Water Authority. Tate served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1969 and attained the rank of First Lieutenant Field Artillery. He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and math from Berry College and a law degree from the Woodrow Wilson College of Law. He and his wife, Lora, have one child and two grandchildren. They reside in Carrollton.

Robert “Tony” Rojas, Board of Examiners for Certification of Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators and Laboratory Analysts (reappointment)
Roberts is the executive director of the Macon Water Authority. Prior to joining the MWA, he served as the city manager for the cities of Moultrie, Vidalia and Hawkinsville. He is currently the president of the Georgia Association of Water Professionals and a member of the Middle Ocmulgee Regional Planning Council. Rojas earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from August State University and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Georgia. He and his wife of 21 years, Pam, have one son, Rob. They reside in Macon. 

Gwen R. Knight, Georgia Council on Aging (reappointment)
Knight is retired from Corporate & Estate Analysts, Inc., which focuses on tax-planning strategies. She serves on the board of directors of the Alzheimer’s Outreach Center and on the executive committee of the Southwest Georgia CARE-NET, an arm of the Rosalynn Carter Institute. She is a recipient of the Martha Eaves Advocating for Positive Change Award and the John Tyler Mauldin Award by the Georgia Gerontology Society. Knight earned an associate’s degree in science from Albany Junior College. She attends Byne Memorial Baptist Church, where she teaches an adult Sunday school class. She and her late husband, Mark, have two children and two grandchildren. She resides in Albany.

Judy F. Grammer, Board of Examiners of Psychologists
Grammer retired as president of Grammer Construction Co. in 1998. She is the past president of Women Construction Owners & Executives, past president of the Chattanooga Chapter of National Association of Women in Construction, and served on the National Board of Associated General Contractors. Grammer and her husband, Bill, have two sons and two granddaughters. They reside in Rock Spring.

William “Brad” Dunagan, Board of Trustees of the Teachers’ Retirement System of Georgia
Dunagan has worked for more than 12 years as an investment adviser and financial consultant, first with Merrill Lynch Co. and currently with Resource Horizon Group in Marietta. He is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and former environmental engineer with Georgia-Pacific Corporation’s Division of Strategic Planning and Analysis Group. He served as board chairman of the Rehabilitation Industries of Northeast Georgia. Dunagan earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgia State University. He and his wife, Mary, have three children and three grandchildren. They reside in Gainesville.

Christine Miller-Betts, Martin Luther King Jr. Advisory Council
Miller-Betts is the executive director of the Lucy Craft Museum of Black History in Augusta. She serves on the board of trustees of Historic Augusta and the Southeastern Museum Association. She is president of the Augusta Women’s Civic Club, a lifetime member of the NAACP and the National Council of Negro Women. Miller-Betts earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in theology from Pacific Lutheran University. She has one daughter, Carol Angelee, and two grandchildren. She resides in Grovetown.

William “Bill” Austin, Martin Luther King Jr. Advisory Board
Austin retired after 26 years as a manufacturing manager with Lockheed Martin’s Missiles Systems Division in Orlando. Prior to Lockheed Martin, he was employed with Lockheed Aircraft in Marietta and General Electric’s Aircraft Engine Division in Cincinnati. He is currently serving his fourth year as mayor of the city of Riceboro and 10th year as president of the board of directors of the Dorchester Improvement Association. Austin earned a bachelor’s degree from Tuskegee University and a master’s degree from Rollins College. He and his wife, Charmayne, have three children and eight grandchildren. They reside in Riceboro.

Lauren E. Gaia, Martin Luther King Jr. Advisory Board
Gaia is a student at Agnes Scott College majoring in international relations and religious studies. She is an intern with Georgia House of Representatives Minority Leader Stacey Abrams and Agnes Scott College’s Office of Sustainability. She has served as a page for the U.S. House of Representatives and volunteered with the DeKalb County Office of Neighborhood Empowerment. She is a co-founder of the Better Together Project at Agnes Scott, a national service initiative of the Interfaith Youth Core. A recipient of the Kilimanjaro Study Abroad Award, she will study in Ifrane, Morocco, this upcoming spring. She resides in Decatur.

Rita Jackson Samuels, Martin Luther King Jr. Advisory Council
Samuels is the co-founder and director of public outreach of Women Flying High, LLC, a female-owned consulting and public engagement enterprise in Atlanta. She is a former White House consultant and special assistant to the deputy director of Community Services Administration. In 1971, she became the first African-American in Georgia history appointed to serve as coordinator of the Governor’s Council on Human Relations. She was the first chair of the Georgia Commission on Women and is a Rosalynn Carter fellow at the Institute of Women’s Studies at Emory University. In 2009, she was inducted into the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame located at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic site. Samuels holds a business and secretarial science certification from Dimery Business College. She and her husband, Stanley, are members of Ebenezer Baptist Church. They reside in Atlanta.

Thomas L. Smith, Martin Luther King Jr. Advisory Council
Smith is a high school civics and American government teacher with DeKalb County Schools. He also serves as an adjunct professor at Georgia Perimeter College. He serves on the Edwards-Miller Foundation for Physical Disabilities board and the Mission Outreach to Africa board of directors. He is the recipient of the Kennesaw State University Presidential Leadership Award and the Atlanta Braves Community Service Award. He served for eight years as the honorary consul general of Peru in Atlanta. Smith earned a bachelor’s degree from Tennessee Temple University, a master’s degree from Georgia State University, and doctorate of education from Argosy University. He and his wife, Orieth, have three sons and one daughter. They reside in Stockbridge.

Daekwon Holloway, Martin Luther King Jr. Advisory Council
Holloway is a 2010 graduate of William H. Spencer High School. He volunteers with the Youth Business Development Program. He currently resides in Columbus.

W. Lee Robinson, Sexual Offender Registration Review Board
Robinson is the current circuit public defender for the Macon Judicial Circuit. He served in Vietnam as an infantry platoon leader with the 173d Airborne Brigade and retired after 31 years of active and reserve duty with the rank of colonel. He serves on the board of governors of the Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia Chapter, the board of directors of Macon’s Cherry Blossom Festival and the Bibb County American Cancer Society. He has served as mayor of the city of Macon and in the Georgia state Senate. Lee earned a bachelor’s in industrial management from Georgia Tech, a master’s in business administration and law degree from Mercer University. Lee and his late wife, Irene, have two children and four grandchildren. He resides in Macon.

Michael P. Bennett, Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority
Bennett owns and operates a large cattle and poultry business in Cumming. He serves on the board of directors of the Citizens Bank of Forsyth County and the Forsyth County Farm Bureau Board. He served 12 years on the Forsyth County Commission, serving several years as chairman. He has also served on the Georgia Baptist Hospital Board and the Georgia Mountains Regional Board. He is a recipient of the Liberty Bell Award for distinguished service by the Forsyth County Bar Association and the Farm Family of the Year award by the Upper Chattahoochee River Soil and Water Conservation District. Bennett holds an electrical contractor license in Georgia. He and his wife, Patsy, have three children and nine grandchildren. They reside in Cumming.

Sarah F. Scott, Board of Cosmetology
Scott owns and operates Style Connection, a full service salon in Gainesville. She has held a master cosmetologist license for more than 40 years. She has been a salon owner for over 20 years. She and her husband, Wallace, have three children and seven grandchildren. They reside in Gainesville.

Simeon F. Deal, Board of Directors of the Georgia Lottery Corporation
Deal is a senior project manager with Harland Financial Solutions in Atlanta. He is a graduate of Statesboro High School and attended Georgia Southern University. He has more than 30 years experience in both the banking and financial software services industry. He and his wife, Lori, have two daughters, Megan and Virginia. They reside in Acworth.

C. Andrew Fuller, Criminal Justice Coordinating Council
Fuller is the chief superior court judge for the Northeastern Judicial Circuit. He is a former administrative judge for the Ninth Judicial District and district attorney for the Northeastern Judicial Circuit. He serves on the Georgia Supreme Court’s Commission on Indigent Defense and the Georgia Supreme Court’s Commission on Dispute Resolution. Fuller earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia and a juris doctorate from Mercer University. He and his wife, Gay, have two daughters, Carolyn and Lauren. They reside in Gainesville.
