Resulting from a barbeque cook-off challenge initiated by Gov. Butch Otter of Idaho and accepted by Gov. Nathan Deal of Georgia, Saturday's Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game between the Boise State Broncos and the Georgia Bulldogs will be preceded by a barbecue cook-off pitting the home states against each other.
The state of Idaho will be represented by Mickey Ray's of Boise and Georgia will be represented by Fox Brothers of Atlanta.
The contest will be a best-of-three competition featuring presentations of ribs, brisket and pork.
A six-person "blind" judging panel will rate dishes in each category from both Mickey Ray's and Fox Brothers. Gov. Deal will be on hand to present the winning barbeque team with their trophy at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, just prior to the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. The Governor's Challenge will take place as a part of the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Cook-Off in the West Plaza of the Georgia World Congress Center outside the Georgia Dome.
The stakes? Idaho has wagered a sack of Idaho potatoes against a basket of Georgia peaches.
The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game features the No. 5-ranked Boise State Broncos of the Mountain West Conference against the No. 19-ranked Georgia Bulldogs of the Southeastern Conference in a prime time nationally televised game to open the college football season Sept. 3 in Atlanta.
