Tens of thousands of Georgians continue to leave approximately $100 million a year in unclaimed Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC), according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This oversight affects both the individual and the community as a whole, since 90 percent of refunds resulting from EITC are spent in the local community according to the IRS.
The Georgia Children's Cabinet Cabinet launched the Earned Income Tax Credit Campaign throughout the State of Georgia in 2005. The campaign promotes awareness of the Earned Income Tax Credit and the benefits from the tax credit.
The EITC is a tax credit for employees who meet certain qualifications, which usually means more money in the pockets of working individuals and families. Families with incomes up to $38,000 are eligible for an array of tax breaks. The Cabinet has focused on awareness through statewide publications and by encouraging state agencies to promote the tax credit to its employees and customers. Increasing a family's annual budget will provide benefits for the children whether the money is used to pay for child care, education, transportation, or to meet other essential family needs.
The First Lady and the members of the Children's Cabinet continue to make a difference in the lives of the citizens of Georgia by advocating, directing and encouraging efforts that increase EITC claims.
