Deal appoints Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit judge

Gov. Nathan Deal has appointed Art Smith to a Superior Court Judgeship within the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit, effective upon his swearing-in.

The appointment comes in the wake of the resignation of the Hon. Douglas C. Pullen who resigned on Sept. 1, 2011. The Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit is comprised of Chattahoochee, Harris, Marion, Muscogee, Talbot, and Taylor counties.

Smith is vice president and senior associate counsel for AFLAC in Columbus. He has served in the U.S. Navy Reserve as a Lt. Commander for the JAG Corps. He currently serves on the boards of Midtown Columbus, Inc., Feed the Valley Food Bank and is the vice chairman of the Downtown Development Authority. Smith serves as the general counsel for the 3rd Congressional District Republican Party of Georgia. He is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, the American Bar Association and the Federalist Society. Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Columbus College, a law degree from Samford University and a master of laws in Taxation from the University of Alabama School of Law. Smith is a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church where he serves on the administrative board. He and his wife, Sue, have two daughters. They reside in Columbus.
